Life's not fair, and, why I love my husband.

My sister-in-law was telling me a story this weekend that reminded of this story I had written last summer...

The ref doesn’t see everything.

Life isn't fair, just look to World Cup Soccer for proof... USA scored yet the ref called no goal.

As background for the story: my way of parenting is structured, consistent, supportive; my husbands way is varied, funny, and unexpected.

And, now the story... Dylan is a good eater, it wasn’t always true, but it is today. At dinner, he will ask how many more bites he has, not because he is trying to limit his intake but because he likes to achieve a goal. So, we eyeball his plate and say, 6, 9, 12, whatever. And, he says, "ok, you count". Usually, I am counting because I sit across from him at dinner at home. Sometimes I get involved in conversation with Josh or Keelyn and I lose track and say the wrong number 3, when it should be 4. And, Dylan corrects me, no that’s 4, and I say, ok, sorry, you’re right, it's 4.

One day, we are out with Granddaddy and KK, and Josh is the one sitting next Dylan. Dylan asks, "how many bites?" I didn’t quite catch the number or the counting because I was talking with Keelyn. Where I joined in again was when I heard my husband say, "sorry Dylan the ref doesn’t see everything the calls stands." Turns out Josh was engaged in conversation and missed a bite. Dylan was pleading his case on the count, and my husband says, "sorry buddy sometimes that’s how it happens, the ref sometimes makes a bad call."

I fight back my instinct to make it fair for Dylan, because I know my husband is sharing a valuable life lesson (and skill)... Even when the call doesn't go your way, you still go on to score your next goal or take your next bite and hope this time it counts.
