The Engagement Story

We were engaged on Friday November 7th, 2003 in Washington DC by the Tidal Basin (we were on our way to visit Josh's sister in New Jersey and then to our friend Erik's birthday party in the Poconos). Our three-year anniversay was that weekend and we were talking about how happy we are, and then he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him, and I said yes! It was a complete surprise for Debra, though Joshua had been planning since the summer.

Around noon, we had lunch at our favorite restaurant, Sunflower. Then, Debra said to Josh that we should take 66 west to 495 rather than trying to hit 495 directly which was the original plan. This was a relief to Josh because he had been hoping to get me to DC so that he could propose. Anyway, we were driving along and Debra was singing Elton John songs and missed that Josh "missed" the exit for 495. But, no big deal because we could pick up 495 from the city.

A couple of Elton John songs later (the last Debra remembers being "Don't Go Breakin' My Heart"), Josh said let's stop by the tidal basin since it's such a nice day, we could walk around and take some photographs. The parking lot was full but Josh was determined so we parked on the street.

Debra was nervous about being parked on the street, but Josh needed to propose (he had tried several times before, but Debra had botched the plan including the night before when she went for drinks with Linda and Jaime). And he did! And, she said yes! After saying she thought she was going to throw up (was this a good sign?)

Like we said, we were headed to Sharyn's house so we called her to let her know we were delayed. Sharyn, by chance, said she and Angelo had been talking about us the night before and were wondering when we were getting married. So, Debra told her the news, and she said, "Shut up, you're lying. I have to go, I have to bake a cake and buy a bride's magazine." We also called Debra's brother, mom, and dad who asked, "Who's the lucky guy?"

Of course, the answer is, we're both lucky!
